Activities of Sub Department / Directorates / Divisions

Activities of Forest (Territorial):-

  • Management of forests on scientific lines through preparation of Working Plans for each Forest Division and its revision at an interval of 10 years.
  • Forest Protection: By way of patrolling to check damage through timber smugglers and other forest offenders.
  • The forest areas of the State is 20,230 square kilometre, out of which 50% of the area is degraded. Forest Department is taking up rehabilitation measures such as planting, sowing of seeds of tree species, sowing of grasses and taking up of soil conservation works etc.
  • Conservation is being given top priority by the Forest Department. Ban on green felling is implemented in letter and spirit. The social obligation is also met out of dry and fallen material to cater the demand of timber and fuel-wood, allowing free granting, allowing confessional timber to the local people residing within and close to the forests
  • Even though revenue realization is not apriority, still handsome revenue is realized by way of sale of timer, firewood, resin and other produces.
  • Forest Department is also providing employment directly as well as indirectly through forest based Industries depend upon forest for raw material supply.
  • Dedicated and strenuous efforts put in by the Forest Department for Afforestation of the degraded forests has yielded successful results.

Activities of Social Forestry:-

    1. Establishment and maintenance of nurseries.
    2. Creation of village woodlots.
    3. Rehabilitation of degraded forests.
    4. Farm forestry.
    5. Pasture/fodder development.
    6. Wetland development.
    7. Strip Plantations.
    8. Institutional Plantations.

Activities of Soil Conservation:-

    1. Formulation and implementation of site-specific schemes to conserve & manage soil and water resources in the state by adopting watersheds approach.
    2. Take up appropriate water conservation measures in and outside forest area for water conservation, impounding of water wherever sites permit to increase ground water recharge and prevent flood.
    3. Estimate soil carbon tapped in the forests of the State and take suitable majors to ensure retention of the carbon in the soil and increase it further.
    4. Create data base on soil and water conservation and conduct need based research to develop appropriate site specific models and techniques.
    5. Provide technical guidance for preparation of schemes on scientific basis for other departments and implement catchment area treatment projects, wherever required.
    6. Coordinate with the institutions and departments working on water conservation in the State as well as outside including Govt. of India for capacity building to act as nodal agency in the State on water conservation.
    7. Create awareness about soil and water conservation by adopting suitable communication strategy and extension measures.

Activities of State Forest Corporation:-

    1. Extraction.
    2. Sales.
    3. Transportation and Mechanization.
    4. Timber Utilization.
    5. Finance.
    6. Planning.
    7. Administration.

Activities of Wildlife Department:-

    1. Scientific Management of protected Areas and Conservation of wild and Endangered species and their habitat.
    2. Management of Wetlands under Prime Minister's Reconstruction Package.
    3. Extensive and intensive research to identify conservation needs.
    4. Conservation awareness and education targeting visitors, educated youth and locals.
    5. Ensuring Peoples participation in Wildlife Conservation through Eco-development programme.
    6. Promote Eco-tourism in protected Areas on sustainable basis.
    7. Control of Wildlife Crimes ad Enforcement of Law.
    8. To address insidious problem on Man – Wildlife Conflict.

Activities of SFRI:-

The State Forest Research Institute (SFRI), Jammu and Kashmir was created in the year 1990, to undertake research activities in the fields of:
  • Biological Sciences
  • Soil Sciences
  • Forest Influence Sciences
  • Forest Management
  • Social Forestry
  • Forest Utilization
  • Library and Documentation
In the year 1995, the State Government accorded sanction for establishment of SFRI as Society, duly registered by Registrar of Societies, J&K Government, under Societies Registration Act VI of 1941 for advance studies and research in:
  • Forestry
  • Wood Science and Technology
  • Forest Environment including Flora and Fauna
Enhancement of forest productivity of both natural and man made forests, suitability of different species, research on nonwood forest products, extension and training have been identified as the key areas of research.

Activities of E.E & RS:-

A. Environment Side:

    1. Environmental Education and Awareness
      • Organizing of Seminars, Painting competitions, Drawing competition, rallies etc.
      • Creation/maintenance of environmental parks.
      • Celebration of environmental weeks and other days.
      • Afforestation in educational institutes.
      • Creation of mini Hi-tech nurseries.
    2. Survey monitoring and preparation of development plans for water bodies of State.
      • Directory of 1248 water bodies has been prepared by the Department.

B. Remote Sensing side:

  • GIS Data base.
  • To generate GIS Database on National Resources for developing efficient Decision Support System (DSS) for sustainable development.
  • The department has undertaken about 45 projects assigned by various departments/ organizations.

Activities of State Pollution Control Board:-

  • To plan a comprehensive programme for the prevention, abatement and control of pollution of water streams, wells and air in the State;
  • To advise the State Government on any matter concerning the prevention, control or abatement of water and air pollution;
  • To collect and disseminate information relating to water and air pollution and the prevention, control or abatement thereof;
  • To encourage, conduct and participate in investigations and research relating to problems of water and air pollution and prevention, control or abatement of the same;
  • To collaborate with the Central Board in organizing the training of persons engaged in programmes relating to prevention, control and abatement of water and air pollution and to organizers mass education programme relating thereto;
  • To inspect sewage or trade effluents, work and plants for the treatment of sewage and trade effluents or any air pollution control equipment / industrial plant in connection with the grant of any consent as required by these Acts;
  • To lay down, modify or annual effluent emission standards for the sewage and trade effluents / air emissions resulting from the discharging of effluents / emissions ;and
  • To perform such other function as may be prescribed or as may, from time to time, be entrusted to it by Central Board or State Government.

Activities of Integrated Watershed Development Project (IWDP):-

To improve the productive potential and increase livelihood options using area specific watershed treatment technologies and strengthening local institutions.
To harmonize watershed development programme and policies across the State in accordance with best practices. There will be four main competent of the "Participatory Watershed Management Project" (PWMP) which are given as under:
  • Institutional Strengthening
  • Sustainable Watershed management.
  • Increasing Livelihood Opportunities.
  • Project Management.
